Calvo and the Matriarchy
From Torg Adventure
Calvo sniffed the air with a grimace on his face. The acrid smell told him that something was wrong with his ship's stardrive after popping out of Hawking-Space. His old girl had gotten him through some tough scrapes, but running this long from the Matriarchy's Interstellar Police had taken its toll on her delicate parts. Too long since her last overhaul. She was not going to make another jump without repairs. Luckily, the thrusters seemed to be in good shape.
He pulled up library info on the system from his computer: Argus Regulii. Five planets: a rock ball, an ice ball, two Jovians, and, perfect, -- a habitable planet with a descent atmosphere. Calvo programmed the computer for a minimal burn trajectory to avoid attracting the I-Cops attention, in case they were in-system, and took a nap. It would be several hours before he got near enough to need to be awake.

He jerked awake to the klaxon. He checked the sensor sweep and found nothing. The planet loomed in the view screen. Time for a manual descent.

(Grab what he can, run into the woods. Hides from flitters. He hides in the mountain forests. It gets cold.)
