He's slumming as a courtier/bard/minstrel, because his heart been captured by a lady-in-waiting of the princess of the realm.

Princess is young, twentyish. She's very ill. The healers can't heal her. She is sent to Braefire for better healers. They can't heal her. Diviners are brought in. They say the only way to heal her is to retrieve a magical amulet from Hell. That a party of adventurers should be sent to Hell to get it. A party is assembled. Big juju dimensional wizards are called in to open the portal to Hell. The party is sent through the portal.

They find themselves in a post-nuclear holocaust world with radiation, mutated animals, plants, insects and people.
