The computer calls you
From Torg Adventure
The computer calls you The chime came from an speaker a little way down the corridor, but it was loud and piercing enough that both your sister and clone heard it, and turned their heads to see you in the door, holding yourself.
A knowing grin immediately spread across the clones face, while your sister blushed and began to stutter.
"I didn't...How long...", "Does it matter?" interrupted the clone, "he's here, and pleased to see us by the look of things".
You were frozen to the spot, not knowing whether to jump in the bed or run away, when the computer repeated its chime and called your name.
"What is it, computer?" you hiss through clenched teeth, still staring at the intertwined bodies on the bed.
"I've just received bad news. Apparently, at some point during the journey, the population of Earth was devastated by war. Billions died, and although there is no immediate danger to yourself or your fellow crew members, it seems highly likely that there are only a few thousand humans left in existence - mostly on far flung colony worlds and distant outposts."
Taken aback, you lean on the doorframe. "I don't believe it, so everything back home is gone?". The speaker crackles for a moment, before the computer replies "A great deal of time has passed since you left Earth. Everything you knew was probably already gone before the war, but yes, now it is certain. Earth is devastated and lifeless." A moment passes, then you ask it loudly if it's possible to on e of the remaining colonies.
"In theory, but there is no reason to do so." The computer replied. "The other colonies are all being affected by the same war that destroyed the population of Earth, as well as internal social upheaval. The only reason that we have not been affected is because we are by far the most distant of all colony ships. For that same reason this ship was equipped with technologies, such as myself, that far exceeded the level of anything available at the other colonies. I estimate that within a few years the crew of this vessel will be the only surviving humans".
Quietly, you enter your sisters cabin. The door slides shut behind you. Only the swishing of the fans breaks the silence in the room, and both your sister and her clone lie in bed mesmerized by your composure.
"I think we may have a problem", you say humourlessly.
