(Shift into college. Change Friday night party into a Frat party. Karen is his best friend, lived in the neighborhood growing up. They competed in high school for science fair champion. Friendly competition between them. They both have crushes on the other, but never did anything about it, because they are shy. Similar to Sue Mckenna. Prom.)
(She's a biological whiz, he's physics or something. Cosmic rays. Her science fair project was about retro-viruses and recombinant DNA in mice. In University, she's moved to humans.
Or he could be a history geek.)

(Synopsis: High school kid (geek) has an accident with Karen's lab
experiment, and gets the power to read minds. He doesn't figure it out for
a bit, then plays around at school. He tells Karen and complains about
being able to read minds all the time and not turn it off. They take an
hour to figure out how to stop reading. Then Karen wants proof that he can
make people do stuff.)
