Ask him what he's going to do now

"So, what's going to become of you now?" you ask "I mean....." you lapse into silence.
He shrugs. "I don't know. I haven't given it much thought. I'll stay here for a while, I think."
"You're not coming back to the states then?"
He looks at you, startled. "I can't just go wherever I want to. It's more complicated than that." He finishes vaguely.
Michael tries again. "I'm tied to this soil. Not as closely as the Baron is, but still tied to it. I have to return to this place every once in a while."
"Oh. Well that's rough." You say.
"Not like I can really go back to my old life anyways." He says.
"So that's it then?" you ask.
"Yup"
Somehow that doesn't seem a right place to end things.
