Notes when West is Dealer:
  1. P2: 6 HCP, 7-card suit, this can only be opened at the 2-level.
  2. P0, P1, P11: With 9 HCP, a five-card suit and nine cards in his two longest suits, North has enough to open 1♠, but this bid has been taken away from him.
  3. P16. With 12 HCP and three trumps opposite West's presumed six, East has enough to bid the Simplex 2NT, showing a good raise to at least the three-level.
  4. P11: With his four-card spade holding, East was planning to bid 2♠ (or possibly 3♠. Double makes it clear that a spade bid was taken away by East's 2NT, and also suggest a penalty double.
  5. With 3-9 HCP, West makes a minimum rebid.
  6. The spades have to be shown!

Notes when North is Dealer:
  1. P14
  2. P0, P1: With 9 HCP, a five-card suit and nine cards in his two longest suits, North has enough to open 1♠.
  3. P8, P5. East has 12 HCP and no 5+ card suit.
  4. P16: The Simplex 2NT: South has four-card spade support and 13 HCP.
  5. P11: With 6 HCP and a 7-card suit, West was going to respond 2 to East's 1NT.
  6. With less than 14 HCP, North makes a minimum rebid.
  7. East has already bid his hand.
  8. With no shortages, South's safest course is to pass.

Notes when East is Dealer:
  1. P14
  2. P8. East has 12 HCP and no 5+ card suit.
  3. P8, P11: South has 13 HCP and no 5+ card suit, so wanted to open 1NT himself.
  4. P2: With 6 HCP and a 7-card suit, West responds naturally to East's 1NT.
  5. With less than 12 HCP, North responds to the double with his cheapest 4+ card suit.
  6. P10: East shows 3-card support for West's presumed 6-card suit by bidding to their Total Trump level.
  7. P10: If South knew North had five spades, he would bid 3♠.

Notes when South is Dealer:
  1. P14
  2. P8, P11: South has 13 HCP and no 5+ card suit, so wanted to open 1NT himself.
  3. P2: With 6 HCP and a 7-card suit, West makes this natural overcall.
  4. P11, P2: With just five spades, North cannot bid them at the 2-level on the 1st round. He wanted to bid [[2{{Cs]] Redshift]] but West has taken that away from him.
  5. P16: East shows 3-card support for West's presumed 6-card suit and 10+ HCP by bidding the Simplex 2NT.
  6. South would have relayed his cheapest 3+ card suit (2), but does not need to. North will get another chance to bid.
  7. West makes a minimum response to the Simplex 2NT.
  8. North has 9 HCP and a further 5 shortage points from his heart void. These 14 points must be worth a 3-level bid.

Result

  • If West leads a club, instead of the natural K, the contract goes two off.
