Matthew Barton
Matthew Barton is the father of Ashleigh Barton and Maible Gallagher though the girls aren't aware that they are related.
Matthew is a fun loving, caring individual. He got along with most everyone and there was rarely a time that you couldn't find him smiling. He managed to make decent grades but that was due to the determination of his Ravenclaw best friend, Benjamin Allen.
Ben and Matt played quidditch grew up living next door to one another; neither could remember a day that they hadn't known the other. They shared a mutual love for quidditch. Each of them played on their respective house teams; Benjamin was the Ravenclaw Beater, while Matthew was the Keeper for Gryffindor. During their 6th year, a rogue bludger hit and killed Benjamin. Matthew gave up his spot on the team the following year and though he loves the sport, he hasn't really played it since.
Matt began spending quite a bit of time with Ben's girlfriend, Alexandrea Hamilton. In the beginning, it was easier to be together because everyone else was tired of hearing about Ben... tired of seeing them mourn his death. They were told to move on, that Ben wouldn't want to see them so upset. Eventually they evolved to finding solace in one another's arms. Not realizing it until it was too late, Matthew fell in love with Alexandrea. Before either of them could really process those feelings, she became pregnant.
Both of their parents urge them to marry and Matthew thought that over time he could make Alexandrea love him. To his dismay, their child was born, and Alexandrea grew more distant, refusing to have anything to do with Matthew or their baby, Ashleigh.
Since then, he's devoted his life to raising Ashleigh. He loves his daughter more than anything and wants her to be happy. He doesn't agree with how Alexandrea treats their child and they fight over it regularly. However, their arguments do not change anything. Alexandrea continues to make both Matt's and Ashleigh's lives miserable and Matthew showers Ashleigh with an over abundance of love in an attempt to make up for what she doesn't get from her mother.
A few years after Ashleigh was born, Matthew gave up the hope that Alexandrea would love him. In a chance meeting, Matt ran into an old friend from school, Alicia Gallagher. The two of them began an affair that resulted in the creation of Matthew's other daughter Maible.
Unlike Ashleigh, Maible had a loving mother and Matthew was unwilling to do anything to make Ashleigh's life worse. He knew that Alicia would love and care for their daughter so he continues to live his life with Alexandrea and Ashleigh as if nothing has happened.
Matt tries to take care of his daughter and Alicia financially but they are both very proud and will rarely willingly accept his money. He visits Maible as often as possible -at least once a month during summer holidays- and ends up leaving money hidden around their house. It's almost impossible to arrange a visit at Hogwarts with either girl because he's hid them from one another their entire lives. One little slip and his secret could be out.
Though everyone wouldn't believe it, he loves both of his daughters very much and there is very little he wouldn't do for them. He tries his best to be a good father; unfortunately for Maible, he's desperately afraid of disappointing his eldest and she's rarely put first in his life.
