- In approximately 1853, about 1000 acres were under cultivation in the Springfield area (Walling 1884:452).
- In 1853, a small trading post was kept by J.N. Donalds near the corner of present-day Mill and Main Streets (Walling 1884:452).
- By comparing the present road network in the study area with that on the first federal survey maps, the following roads, or parts thereof, date to about 1853-1855: Mill Street, Game Farm Road, Thurston Road, McKenzie Highway, and Jasper Road.
