In the 1930s, however, a disease called the “downey mildew” dealt a death blow to the hops industry, and by 1937, the production of hops was no longer tenable anywhere in the state.
Eugene
- In mid-August: All the pin-ball machines, "digger" machines and similar devices in operation in Eugene must be removed by September 1 or those who have them in operation will be prosecuted. District Attorney L.L. Ray addressed a letter to Sheriff C.A. Swarts instructing him to make arrests if he finds any of the devices in operation here or in any other part of the county on or after the first day of the month.
