Mining, surveying, politics, milling, and fruitgrowing were all part of Joseph G. Gray’s life (1824-1899). He came across the plains in 1853, settling in Eugene four years later. During the course of his business endeavors, he served as county treasurer for ten years, from 1874-84, and again in 1894-96. He was also the first president of the Eugene City Council.
