Paul Brattain was born December 28, 1801 in Randolph County, North Carolina to Benjamin Franklin Brattain and Mary (Hill). Paul went with his family to Tennessee at an early age and at 16 went overland and by boat to Hancock and Morgan Counties in Illinois (jcb). There, he was active in politics and was elected to the constitutional convention of Illinois (jcb). He moved the family to Van Buren County, Iowa about 1838 where he continued to be active in politics (jcb). The family left Iowa for Oregon in 1852 following two children who had moved west in 1849 and 1850 (jcb). Paul arrived in Oregon from Iowa in 1852 and was a farmer in Lane County. He was a Republican representative of Lane County in the 1857 Constitutional Convention Of Oregon held in Salem August 17 to September 18, 1857. The other representatives for the county were William W. Bristow (Democrat), Enoch Hoult (Republican),

James A. moved to Van Buren Co., IA about 1851 (je) and on to Oregon in 1852 with George and William, apparently brothers, .in the same wagon train as Paul Brattain (lsd). He took up a donation land claim #1644 in Lane County in 1853. He owned large tracts of land in Whitman Co., WA as well as in Lane Co. OR (je). A James E. Ebbert was with the family 1860 and 1870, born ca 1857 OR (c1860,1870) but who apparently was not their son (c1900 lists no children born to Elizabeth and biography says wife died 1902 leaving no family). This must be the James E. Ebert with wife Hellen J. living next to James A. in 1880 who lists mother as born MO whereas Elizabeth was born IL. That suggests he was adopted, perhaps from a brother of James. A James E. Ebbert is in Laurel Hill Cemetery, Lane Co., OR (no dates available online) who apparently died before 1900 as Hellen J. Ebbert is listed as a widow then (c1900). She was born ca 1858 (c1880) or April 1860 OR, married 12 Nov 1879 Lane Co., OR (js) and has a son Chester, born June 1881 OR (c1900). Hellen is said to be Helen Jane BOND, dau of Allen BOND and Rachel ROBERTSON (js,ab) (ROBINSON) (ab). She married second Walter McINTOSH (js). Chester A. Ebbert, born 31 May 1881, died 15 Mar 1974 Tulare Co., CA (di) living in Porterville (ssdi) married 1900-1903 Mamie SEE (js) or Mary, apparently the one born 30 July 1885 MI, died 15 April 1966 Tulare Co., CA, mothers maiden name SPALSBUR (di). Chester and Mary had at least 6 children including Lewis Clark, born 15 Oct 1905 WA, died 15 Aug 1980 Tulare Co., CA (di), living El Cajon, San Diego Co., CA (ssdi), and Helen Sadie (di) who is said to have married Cash VANDERVORT (ab) and later apparently an ARMISTEAD (di). Helen was born 13 Jan 1908 ID, died 12 Oct 1997 Tulare Co., CA (di). Also perhaps Clara Rae DICKEY, born 16 Jan 1911 ID, died 8 Feb 1978 Riverside Co, CA (di) living Fountain Valley, Orange Co., CA (ssdi) and Mary E. CULPEPPER, born 27 Sept 1917, died 28 March 2002, last residence Garden Grove, Orange Co., CA, last benefit to Topock, Mohave Co., AZ (ssdi).
