"I haven't a notion," you say, shrugging. "This is a matter best decided by the king."
The king glances at you for a moment, dissapointed in your inability to judge, but turns back to the duke.
"I shall appoint my son to investigate this claim." Before you have a chance to protest, the Duke thanks the King profusely and it seems the deal is set.
The king dismisses the Duke, then addresses you directly.
"Too long you have had it far easier than I or my father ever did. You have dawdled and played about, but with little concern for the fact that someday you will be king." He shakes a finger angrily at you. "You will do this task, and you will see it finished, or so help me I will banish you from the kingdom and let you make a go of it on your own."
You nod, feeling scolded, and a bit angry.
"I do this for your own good." the king says, reaching out to pat your shoulder. "You are wise beyond your years, strong, and able to accomplish any task you set your mind to. This will help you discover what it means to be a king. Now, off to your room straight away and prepare."
You walk the stretch to your room thinking on it. While you might not agree completely with your father, you relish the chance to leave the walls of the castle and see the realm for yourself. The thought excites you, with the possibility for wild adventures so close to your grasp.
You head off to your room, bristling with possibility
