After you have installed the JMRI programs it will be necessary to set the preferences in order to run the programs.
First -- you must determine which connection you are making to the program -- this will be determined by the COM Port which is being used by your interface.
Second - click on Edit then Preferences to open the Preference selection window.
The Layout connection box should show 'none' to indicate that you have not yet selected the interface device which you are using to connect JMRI to your Command Station/layout.
Click on the arrow on the right side of this box and use the drop down items to select your interface device.
The serial port box should show 'none'. This indicates that you have not yet selected the com port by which your interface device is connected to the computer.
Click on the arrow on the right side of this box and select the appropriate com port.
The Baud Rate section should not normally be changed.
The Command Station type sction should be chnaged to reflect which Command Station you are using.
The GUI Style section determines how the program will look on your commputer screen. This can be set as you choose.
The Programmer defaults: Format selection must also be completed depending on the interface you are using. For most users 'Comprehensive' should be selected.
When you are finished click on Save.
At this time you should Quit and then Restart the program.
When the program restarts you should see the opening screen which will now indicate how you are connected to your layout.
Select Edit then Preferences to ensure that the selections you made are correct.
