Summer Institute for Teachers on Genocide and Human Rights (Focus on Africa and Southeast Asia)

Northern Illinois University

June 14 – 17, 2010 (Begins Monday at 11:00 am and ends Thursday at 2:00 pm.)

The 21st century has not brought us any closer to ending genocide. Sadly it remains an ever-present reality in our world. But with the recent call to action by the Genocide Task Force, pleading for Americans to create "a permanent constituency" against impunity, ignorance, and apathy when it comes to genocide, NOW IS THE TIME TO ACT.

In its fifth year, the Roger W. Smith Genocide and Human Rights Summer Institute for educators offers you the chance to become a catalyst in the creation of this constituency. By studying with some of the leading scholars and teachers in the field of genocide, human rights, and violence, you will be better prepared to offer instruction to your students and shape the next generation's efforts to stop the violence. All K-16 educators are welcome to attend. Resource and curriculum materials will focus on the middle/high school/community college levels.

Keynote speaker: Prof. Scott Straus, UW-Madison (Rwanda); Featured speakers: Prof. Judy Ledgerwood, NIU (Cambodia); Prof. Nancy Lutz, SIUE (Indonesia and East Timor); Prof. Ismael Montana, NIU (Darfur and the Sudan); Prof. Susan Russell, NIU (Philippines and Thailand)

Cost: $175.00 which includes lodging (double occupancy), all meals, CPDUs/CEUs and materials.

Stipends: Modest stipends will be available to the first 20 registered participants.

CPDUs/CEUs: Participating K-12 Illinois educators will receive 40 CPDUs. All others will receive 4 CEUs.
