Help:LineageStyle

From Eliafamily

Lineage pages are a listing of all of the members of each branch of the family. Maria and Nicola Elia had eight children, seven of whom had children of their own. All seven lineages have been created for this website, named for their Elia progenitors (with married last names):

Although the lineage pages are already created, it will of course be necessary to edit them in the event of births, marriages, and divorces. This Help Guide is provided for reference to the format and style of the lineage pages.

The Design Of Lineage Pages

Lineage page have 5 components: a brief introduction with a picture of the progenitor of the line, followed by four subsections. The first subsection, which is probably the only one that would need to be edited, is the lineage itself. The second subsection contains links to the other 6 lineage pages. The third subsection contains links to the biographies for Maria and Nicola Elia and Mary Elia. The fourth subsection is titled How You Can Help, and describes how people can edit and add biographies.

Each lineage page ends with the special code [[Category:Lineage]], which lists the lineage on the list of all lineages automatically.

The Design of the Lineage Subsection

Here is an example of the Tony Elia Lineage code (as of October 22, 2006):

*[[Marie Patchin|Marie]] and David Patchin
**[[David Patchin|David]] and Andrea Patchin
**[[Kristin Behuniak|Kristin]] and Dan Behuniak
***[[Joshua Behuniak]]
***[[Elena Behuniak]]
***[[Jonathon Behuniak]]
**[[Tim Patchin]]
*[[Anthony Elia II|Anthony]] and Sue Elia
**[[Anthony Elia III|Anthony]] and Melanie Elia
**[[Kate Elia]]

The format is pretty easy. The asterisk puts a bullet on the page and the number of asterisks tell you how far to indent. So Tony's kids have one asterisk, their kids have two, their kids three, and so on.

Who To Include

List all Elias by birth and by adoption along with their current spouses. Divorced spouses should promptly be removed from the lineage list and from the biography page of the Elia spouse; see Help:NameChangePolicy. It is not necessary to remove spouses from their children's biography pages.

The case of stepchildren should be handled on a case-by-case basis (see Help:StepChildrenPolicy). The lineages are not meant to be exclusionary; stepchildren who feel themselves a part of the family can be listed and included. Stepchildren who might be offended by being included can certainly elect not to be listed.

How To Format Links

The main purpose of the lineage page is to provide a place where one can easily jump to the biographies of the family members. Links should be formatted to highlight the name of the Elia member of a spouse pair and the Elia member should always be listed first. Thus, an unmarried Elia can simply be linked to their biography as follows:

** [[Horatio Elia]]

An Elia with a spouse would be listed as follows:

** [[Horatio Elia|Horatio]] and Esmerelda Elia

The words before the pipe symbol (|) is the name of the biography page. Biography pages are always named by the first and last name of the Elia family member; the spouse's biography will also be found on that page. The words to the right of the pipe symbol are what is highlighted, so the item Horatio and Esmerelda Elia would have only the word Horatio highlighted, and clicking that word takes the reader to a biography page titled Horatio Elia.
