“Yes,” you say. “She would like a hand out of this ditch.”
“My goodness,” the grandmother says. “Such forwardness. It can hardly be accounted.”
“Indeed,” the girl says with the same hidden smile. “Earl Wickney, give the poor thing a hand up, and then invite her to our carriage.”
Earl Wickney looks momentarily shocked, but he moves forward to the edge of the ditch, positions himself, and reaches a hand down to you.
