Rescue/Investigate the smell coming from the back

I head into the back, and take a whiff of whatever is in the air. It's strong, and makes me feel nauseous. In fact, I feel dizzy. I turn to leave, and I feel a heavy thump on my head, knocking me unconscious.

I don't know when I wake up, or where I am. Well, that's a lie. I figure out that I'm upside down. Looking down, (or is it up?) I notice a street below. I look at my feet, and see they are tied to a flagpole. I piece it together. Someone, probably the tenant in the apartment, knocked me out, and brought me here to scare me. I am on the other side of the building, above a busy intersection. In fact, I can see the spot I swerved out of the way of the truck from up here! Then I realize that the rope I'm tied from is slowly untying. Very slowly. A voice comes from the window under me.

"Ha ha, bitch! Came here to kill me, but it ain't gonna happen, now is it? That there rope's gonna come undone in 5 minutes, and you'll become road paint. I'll keep this gun, and your phone. I'll save your friends some time and text them the picture of you dead, answering any questions they might have. Seeya, slut!"

I whimper. Five minutes to save myself so I can save Alex. My hands are tied as well, and I have no fucking clue what to do. I shake my body a little, and out comes my pocket knife. Lucky me. He didn't find it. I curl upwards, hooking my hands binding over the pole, and thank the five years of gymnastics I took. Manipulating the slide with my tongue, and biting the handle to hold it as I move my head left and right to cut my hands free. Finally, it cuts, and I work on my feet. Finally free, I grab the pole with both hands. Then, the window opens.

"What the fuck? How'd you-? Never mind, I'll just fucking end you now, bitch!" He retreats into the room, and I can hear him rummaging around. He's getting the gun. I take action, shimmying over to the side, and climbing back onto the roof. I crawl on my knees for a second, but stop to breathe some relief. It's short lived though. Once he sees I'm not there, he'll come up to kill me. I have to think fast. There's three things I could do.

• Hide behind a heating duct and wait it out.
• Grab a brick and hide near the door.
• Try to lock the roof access door.
