"Excuse me!" you say as the girl rushes past.
She stops and looks at you. "Yes?"
"I am Maria, the new maid," you continue. "Why are you crying?"
"I pity you," she replies. She steps close and whispers. "It was horrible. The men are lecherous and abusive, the mom doesn't care, and the other servants will not help you as they are afraid they will be fired if they do." She steps back, takes a deep breath, and in a louder voice continues, "Good luck, Maria."
She turns and rushes away before you can reply.
I must endure, you think. It can't be as bad as she made it sound. And my family needs me to keep this job.
You take a deep breath and prepare to step towards the door. A tall, slim, elegantly-dressed, middle-aged woman with hair dyed jet-black suddenly appears in the opening. "Welcome to Blake Manor," she says with a warm smile. "I am Elizabeth Blake. You must be our new maid, Maria." You nod and curtsy. "Please enter," she continues, gesturing for you to come forward. You step to the door. "My husband James and son Robert are also home," she intones. "I would like to introduce you to both of them. Who would you like to meet first?"
