You consider hiding her, but then decide against it. You don't like the look of this case anyway. If there's something she hasn't been telling you, you don't want to touch it. You pull your gun from its holster just in case.
It's a man with a small black moustache wearing a small black gun. You catch sight of the gun under his coat as he takes off his hat. His clothes look like they've come out of a bespoke tailor's. He wears them well. His manner is cool, like a cat eyeing its prey. He looks first at the blonde, then at you, then at the gun you're holding loosely in his general direction.
'I'm sorry if I intruded,' he says. He turns to the blonde. 'Hello Estelle. I thought I saw you come in to this place so I thought I'd pop in.'
'I was just leaving Marty,' the blonde says. You start as you realize who the man is.You won't find many people within fifty miles who haven't heard of Marty Riordan. Especially not if they're in your line of work.
'I wanted to engage Mr. Horne's services,' the blonde continues. 'I've been having some trouble with my secretary. I think she's stealing money from my room. I wanted to know if Mr. Horne would mind investigating since I didn't want to go to the police with it.' She looks at you earnestly. She wants to know whether you'll take the case.
