The door to the house is hanging off its hinges, and the inside smells of cats and cooking spices. There's also a smell of rot, which comes from the dead bodies that litter the floor. None of them are moving, but I keep my distance from them. We don't yet know how long it takes for the dead to start living again, so we'll keep our distance for now.
Most of us hang back and let Eli, Zoe, and Elena wander through the rooms. They come back with a duffle bag which Zoe opens to reveal clothes and bandages. "You never know what you might need," she says.
Suddenly we hear a movement from below us. "There's someone in the basement," I whisper.
