Go with Mike and Buster
From Create Your Own Story
"I haven't heard the whole story yet," you say. "I'll go with the guys."
"All right," says the uniformed man. "Follow me."
As Holly goes off in the opposite direction, the man leads you, Mike, and Buster into a large building, through a maze of passageways, and finally into a small laboratory. He introduces the three of you to a portly, middle-aged man in a white lab coat. "This is Dr. Wilson. He'll brief you on what's been happening." With a quick salute, the uniformed man leaves.
"Welcome to Antarctica," says Dr. Wilson, with a faint smile. "I only wish it were under better circumstances. Here's the basic version of the story. Seven researchers were spending the winter in a camp a few hundred miles inland. During the Antarctic winter, it's too cold for planes to operate in the interior of the continent, so they were completely isolated there for several months. Last week, the weather finally warmed up enough for a plane to fly in and pick them up. We talked to them by satellite phone the night before the scheduled pickup and all seven of them seemed to be doing fine."
He takes a deep breath. "When the plane got there, they found a scene straight out of a horror movie. Five of the researchers were dead, their bodies just ripped open. The other two - John Strand and Bethany Garcia - were missing. They searched the camp, but couldn't find them. They didn't want to stay too long because whatever - I mean whoever killed those people was still out there, and they didn't have any security with them. They cleaned up the bodies as best they could and brought them back here. Other search parties failed to turn up any clues as to what happened or any trace of the two missing scientists."
"What do you think happened?" Mike asks.
Wilson coughs nervously and says, "Well, there were only the seven of them there, and it was physically impossible for anyone else to reach the camp. Therefore, the only logical explanation is that one or both of the missing people committed the murders." His tone says he doesn't really believe his own words.
You give Wilson a piercing stare. "Is that what you really believe, or what the people in charge want everyone to believe?"
Wilson stutters and stammers for a few moments. Buster jumps in and says, "Well, it's what I believe. Logic and reason dictate that that is the only possibility. John, Bethany, or both of them killed the others."
"Every polar scientist goes through a strict psychological examination, and Wilson said himself that they talked to the group the night before the killings and they all seemed fine," you say.
"Isolation for months can drive otherwise sane people to madness, up to and including a murderous rage," says Dr. Wilson. He still doesn't sound convinced of his own words, but Buster is nodding his head.
"What about the blue lights?" Mike asks.
"The researchers did report seeing strange blue lights in the sky just before the...incident," Wilson answers. "Probably just the aurora."
Mike shakes his head. "They're scientists. They know what the aurora looks like. If they reported those lights as strange, it wasn't the aurora."
"You too?" Buster sighs. "Okay, then what's your explanation, if no one else could get to the camp?"
"No one with human capabilities could get to that camp. But those with abilities other than human..."
Buster simply rolls his eyes, but Dr. Wilson looks extremely nervous. He looks at his watch and says, "It's getting late. Let's get you settled in your quarters."
The three of you gather your bags. You are sharing a room with Holly, while Mike and Buster have a room on the other side of the hall.
Holly is lying on the bottom bunk, fast asleep. You put your things away in some drawers and climb up to the top bunk. You feel your tight clothing rubbing against your muscular body. Maybe a little fun would help you relax and take your mind off of aliens and conspiracies for a while.
