Go down the ladder and see where it leads

You're more curious as to what's beneath your feet than what they're talking about. You turn to the metal ladder, and head quietly down it, glad for your bare feet.
You emerge onto a decent-sized ledge. At the far side of it is the sewage canal, which explains the smell. You can see a narrow ledge heading off downstream. Looking around the ledge, you spot several crates sitting on it.
Do you:
- Attempt to open one of the crates
- Head down the tunnel, and see where it goes
- Sneak back up the ladder to the door
