Downfall/The small inflatable life raft

From Create Your Own Story

During the emergency drill you didn't think much about it, but now all you can think about is that your rescue position is a life raft with Cate while Debra, Kirsten and Will are assigned to a life boat. You start to argue with the crew members, but so are several other passengers. The atmosphere is filled with shouting and whining, people flailing their arms in every possible direction. The chaos is almost unbearable, and the crew members are attempting to sort things out by strictly following the emergency procedure. No matter how much you argue and plead, your steward is adamant. Impromptu, he pushes you away and directs your children towards a lifeboat. Another steward grabs your arm and drags you and Cate to the life raft while the life boat is lowered towards the sea. Kirsten shouts something you can't hear before the boat disappears into the dark, away from the ship.

Cate and you enter the life raft. It should hold more than just the two of you, but a sudden explosion shakes the ship. The steward hectically operates the boom and lowers the raft. He then jumps ship, apparently trying to reach the raft, but he falls short. In the meantime, the ship's lights extinguish, most likely due to the explosion. The ship, still making speed, was the only source of light, and with the lights gone, you suddenly can't see anything. You lose sight of the steward. He doesn't reach the raft, and you soon see absolutely nothing.

You worry about your children, and you send a prayer that nothing happened to them. As if reading your thoughts, Cate's voice sounds reaches you: "They are safe, Jules. Their boat was safe, and it was manned with crew. Nothing's gonna happen to them. They'll be rescued soon."

"Sure," you agree, but your voice trembles.

"Ah!" Cate says. "A flashlight."

She turns the torch on. You both take stock. The life raft holds a few supplies, food rations and water, although less than one would expect. There is also a radio, but after a few futile attempts to operate it, you have to realize it is probably broken. The life raft appears not well maintained.

"We better save batteries," Cate says. You agree, and she turns off the flashlight. You don't talk; you are too worried about Debra, Kirsten and Will. Some time during the night, you doze off.
