Cut through the fence out of the soldiers' sight

You'd rather avoid a fight, you think. Moving southward silently, you walk parallel to the border fence until it curves and the soldiers can no longer see you, then begin making your way cautiously towards the fence.

Suddenly, you feel something underneath your foot and freeze. Looking down, you see with horror that you have stepped on a land mine. You know that as soon as you step off you'll be blown to pieces. You curse to yourself. You should have known better! You should have remembered that the borders in this part of the world are full of mines!

Trying to calm yourself, you dedicate several minutes to thinking of your family and friends and making peace with God. Then, when you're ready, you raise your foot.
