Archived Messages

I have decided to put older messages and messages not likely to get updated in archive pages. That way I can stay ahead of additional clutter that may or may not be coming up soon --Durzan 00:07, 27 February 2019 (UTC)

Main Page

You've certainly put a good deal of effort into the new main page, and the main page did need to be de-cluttered. I am a bit hesitant about the idea of completely removing stories from the main page, though. We've tried that in the past and RobKohr requested we put a sampling of stories back. Those story links, especially the adult story links, are what drives traffic on the site. --Platypus 12:24, 26 February 2019 (UTC)

I like the latest iteration. You've done a great job it! --Platypus 20:14, 26 February 2019 (UTC)

The colored columns weren't a bad idea, but on my display, the columns were pressed up against each other, so it wasn't easy to tell one column from the other.

I only plan to keep the Main Page under protection for a few days. These kinds of vandals tend to give up in relatively short order. --Platypus 21:46, 23 August 2019 (UTC)

Collaboration

i appreciate the thought, but I do have projects of my own to work on when I find the time to do more posting here. --Platypus 21:01, 1 March 2019 (UTC)

You know, you could have asked before you did that. I'm not too annoyed but could you please ask before you rearrange my- or anybody else's- discussion page?

As for "Tales of Illnora", I'm willing to help. But do you have a theme? A mood? A genre? What's the central concept for the story? How many branching points do you have in mind?

I have to warn you, I'm a chronic procrastinator and I have college so I'll probably be very inconsistent with my contributions.

-Fredhot, March-1-2019.

I'm not a good enough writer to do a collaboration work, regrettably. I can barely get coherence on pages which are entirely my own ideas. -- Teejay

Would it be too much trouble for you to put a page on your story for spitballing ideas for everybody working on it to see?

---Fredhot, March-3-2019.

I'll go for A and B.

---Fredhot, March-3-2019

Here is a tome that should provide you with plenty of ideas for your current story.

[thetrove.net/Books/GURPS%20Classic/Dragons.pdf ] ---Fredhot, March-3-2019.

While I'm at it, take a look at the tomes here. Generic Universal Roleplaying System (GURPS) tends to cover a wide variety of genres so if you're looking for ideas, you should find plenty here.

Hey, you're back. Got any new ideas brewing in your head?

---Fredhot, April-30-2019.

Perhaps we could start with the rest of the dragon masters, giving them introductions, and then brainstorm on what the first mission for each dragon master will be?

---Fredhot, May-06-2019.

With the small amount of time I have, I have to put it where the inspiration or motivation is highest. The one Kirsten scene has to do for a while, I think. Unless - maybe, there is something with Will/Debra. We'll see.

-User:Minnie May Hopkins March 10th 2019

Well, it seems like you're following in my footsteps. I joined CYOS with no idea what I was doing, diving headfirst into writing. Why not come back? Although I do have to warn you... I haven't been very active. --Magikarp7297, the Wild Card 23:57, 10 March 2019 (UTC)

Upaging

You may need to up the age of certain characters in your writing. Underage sex is no longer allowable on this site. A character barely out of elementary school is off limits. --Platypus 18:28, 16 June 2019 (UTC)

An immature, yet legal age character is fine. I've done a lot of up-aging through Smutty Sex Romp and Rampage, which are huge stories, and i still keep finding more that I've missed. Some of the characters now seem ridiculously immature for their stated age, but it is what it is. RobKohr sprung the new regulations on the site very abruptly, but he's also right to be concerned about possible legal ramifications. The righteous right-wingers have gone after any perceived perversions with a vengeance, acting as if thought is equivalent to deed. --Platypus 20:13, 16 June 2019 (UTC)

Apologies

Sorry for the mixup my guy. A bit of a kneejerk reaction on my part, I'll admit. I'll be sure to let you know if I'll be up for helping with some retouching/editing of other stories. --TheWatcher 02:10, 17 June 2019 (UTC)

Adopting

Adopting long-abandoned stories isn't a bad idea. If someone should wander back after leaving for several years and takes exception to the idea, we'll cross that bridge if we come to it. i doubt it's something we need to worry about.

As for locating tapdancingfish, I can't think of any way to do that beyond what you've already tried. --Platypus 22:46, 20 June 2019 (UTC)

Life of a 13 year old

Thank you for removing the story from the main page.

I'm going to have to give this story some thought. If I can come up with a way to get it in line with the current rules, I'll edit it, but I have a feeling it's going to have to go. --Platypus 21:07, 12 July 2019 (UTC)

Applying for staff

It's true that I could use the help, as I'm the last active sysop. I got the position when me and Fruitbat went to the main editthis.info page and alerted RobKohr about the attacks from the vandal organization calling themselves the Roman Empire. Getting in touch with RobKohr these days is easier said than done. --Platypus 21:27, 12 August 2019 (UTC)

I would indeed be willing to vouch for you. You've worked hard to do right by this site.

A part of me thinks that adding an index page for Banned Stories might be in order, but a more cautious part of me is afraid that everyone will flock to the banned stories and make matters worse, not better. --Platypus 22:23, 16 August 2019 (UTC)

Twine

Doing Rampage as a Twine game wasn't something I'd thought of, but I might consider it. I'll have to do some research in nonexistent spare time. --Platypus 20:47, 15 September 2019 (UTC)

Downtime

I don't know why this site sometimes goes down. I would think it would be of some concern to RobKohr, but since he no longer communicates with us, there's no way of knowing if he's busy trying to fix things when the site is out or not, or even if he's aware of the outages. It is quite frustrating. --Platypus 20:46, 23 October 2019 (UTC)

Unfortunately, i don't have any archive access or know of any way to download it. --Platypus 21:34, 24 October 2019 (UTC)

I might yet try to transfer over to some other site. This site certainly does have its ups and downs, and it always has. I might even have my old CHYOA log in saved somewhere. It's sort of funny to note that the plagiarist who was posting there and claiming credit for Smutty Sex Romp gave up without getting all that far into it. --Platypus 16:34, 23 March 2020 (UTC)

Any progress on this? This site is unbearably slow at best, and utterly unusable at worst. I've checked in once or twice over the last couple of years, and only gotten my urge to contribute killed off instantly.
Is CHYOA as permissive as editthis-info? (Not asking about underage stuff such as the content scrubbed from Smutty, I get that, but if CHYOA frowns upon... darker themes*, that would be good to know upfront. Essentially, could the entirety of Smutty Sex Romp be ported or not?)
I wouldn't consider people posting Smutty excerpts "plagiarists", Platypus. I mean, of course they are, but nobody "owns" wiki content, and trying to oppose them only results in the story being stuck here on this unusable site, so... isn't it better that the story gets out there, regardless of which exact editor posts which page? Try to think of it as a glass half full kind of situation, Plat, is all I'm saying.
*for instance, take your bog-standard Lovecraftian story about fish men from the ocean. Such a story needs to be able to depict reluctance, violence, death, bestiality, impregnation and transformation themes. Heavy stuff for people unfamiliar with proper fetishes. Myself I never write about women that are truly scared or in pain - at most they're annoyed, irritated or confused (and nearly always aroused); but explaining the difference ain't worth it. You probably get it; others simply won't. At least here everything goes (with the one exception). What about CHYOA?

Anyway, see ya Anedwcan 11:08, 5 May 2020 (UTC)

Hey Durzan! I saw on the General Discussion page that you're trying to make a dump of CYOS. I'm gonna take a stab at it myself if you haven't already figured it out. It's looking like more work than I was expecting (never worked with Python before), but I'll keep on if you haven't managed to dump it yet. I'll let you know as soon as I have the xml.

--Pickles 19:20, 13 May 2020 (UTC)

Is it just me, or is chyoa full of regular stories just pretending to be "choose your own story"? Story after story begins with only one choice, and then only one choice...
Also any "choice" is often only at the intro page (and then it dries up after just a few short paragraphs). Basically, it's like five or seven completely separate stories trying to live under the same header. I haven't found anything like Smutty Sex Romp, where you focus on ONE thing (actually two major things, male and female) and then let the story go both deep and wide.
Also CHYOA appears to support variables which this site does not, at least if you trust the help documents. But I haven't found a single story that plays more like a game (where you can have circular paths, and opening up new choices based on decision made elsewhere). Anedwcan 14:44, 17 July 2020 (UTC)

CHYOA

I'm game, shoot me a link. Though, um, you probably shouldn't expect me to pop by too much.

I'm sorry for that, I just have a bad work ethic and, well, I'm not going to abandon this website yet. Mostly because, despite it being filled to the brims with porn, I actually want to try to write an actual story on here.

Yes, yes, I'll get back to "Tales of Illorna" too, I just usually have a lot of work to do and I need to a little time come up with some ideas.

P.S Why is it called "Life of a Slave"? You don't play as a slave, the slave isn't the protagonist, why call it that? (Lightbulb) Maybe the protagonist will become a slave due to that war they were talking about. Write about that, eh?--Fredhot16 18:41, 14 March 2020

I just registered as Fredhot16 or fredhot16.

No luck with the dump generator. But-

So I gave the dumpgenerator.py my best attempts (though admittedly I have no prior knowledge of Python or webcrawlers) and it seems like the tool won't work with this version of MediaWiki. When I use the /api.php method, my CMD prompt tells me to use an application that won't work with MediaWiki 1.15 (1.16 is the earliest version it supports). And CYOS' index is broken or something (a page called 'index.php' isn't the index), so I couldn't get the index method to work either.

But luckily the Special:Export function seems to work just fine (editthis.info/wiki/Help:Backing_up_your_wiki). It's not going to be organized the same way a webcrawler would do it, but newer MediaWikis support importing Special:Export dumps (www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Importing_XML_dumps). It's going to be near impossible to move the whole site without shell access (as we'd have to do it 100 articles at a time with only default sysop privileges), but I'm assuming you (or someone else willing to import the files) will have that.

I made XML dumps of Smutty Sex Romp and Rampage as a test for how big we can make each file, and it tops at about 5,000 articles (this is including all revision history). So rather than moving the whole site in one big XML file, we dump as many stories as we can into each XML and move everything that way.

The easiest way to dump articles, I have found, is to put the name of the category for whatever you're dumping into the category form on Special:Export (so, as a test, try 'Three sisters RM'). It will then generate up to 5,000 ish article names (though for TSR it would stop at the page count) preformatted for the Special:Export function. Stormraven (author of the 'Backing up your wiki article' I linked earlier) recommended using the Special:AllPages catalogue to dump an entire wiki, but almost every page of it is pedoblocked. So article titles will have to be gleaned via category or some other method for stories longer than 5,000 pages (I've already done this for Smutty Sex Romp).

It's going to suck to be the guy importing all of this, but it seems very possible. If anything this might be better than the dumpgenerator.py-- we can leave behind any undeleted spam or poor articles (I have read through many stubs in the Pit of Abandoned Stories, and most of them don't need to exist on any prospective new site). Also be easier to leave behind stories with too much pedo content to scrub, assuming this (currently hypothetical) new site has a stricter pedo policy than editthis.info.

I hope some of this proves useful! If there's anything I can do to help, please let me know. --Pickles 04:18, 7 June 2020 (UTC)

Tales of Illnora

Hello there!

I saw on Platypus' User Talk that you were wanting a collaboration on your story, Tales of Illnora and was interested in your story. Are you still accepting proposals to collaborate? It looks VERY interesting!

I hope to help you soon! --TheFreddyFazbear54 12:26 29th July 2020 (UTC)
