Cora's Embarrassing Day

As what seemed the natural progression of things, Cora got a job at the library. She wanted to see those books badly, it was true, but she wanted ALL books badly. Being surrounded and paid was a good idea.

She worked up to getting the job for months, doing copious amounts of volunteer work and dropping hints to the librarians. Her schooling and education was not the matter - it was just a matter of time. In months, she retrieved the job, and having just begun, so began the one hot day.

Cora showed up to work fifteen minutes early, let in by the friendly, but slightly tired looking Evelyn. There were probably fifteen librarians here, now, as well as a small security staff, and Cora likely would never remember all their names. Cora learned how to log in, and promptly was given training on how to look up and locate books - something she was already fine at.

Not an hour into the day, and Evelyn was pulled to help with the busy-ness picking up that morning. Too many schools were stopping by. Cora was left on the second floor - general genre fiction and literature, which was relatively empty. She was told to help anyone who came up to the desk, and if she got confused, to direct them to the first floor's information desk - likely they would be busy for a few hours yet.

Cora was not completely alone on the floor, although her counterpart, Sylvia, was busy shelving books in what felt a mile away, far out of sight in the complete silence of the library's morning.

She knew the rare books were on the fourth floor, and no one would ever see her. She also knew where the keys were - in an office on the first floor, although it was fairly busy there now, it being the children's floor and main checkout/entrance/exit area. She thought she may be able to at least sneak a peek - even read a few pages if she was lucky. No one would be in the room at all today, at least, so they said.

Or, she could simply do her job, and ask about it later. It occurred to her that maybe if she convinced an important patron they wanted to see the books, themselves, perhaps she would have leverage to go up as well.
