She couldn't risk it, Katie decided. Not in this state. Too many things could happen to her, and all of them bad. What if she fell down, or got lost, or encountered an evil person in this rain.
So Katie waited.
The rain lashed against her body, big, hard, cold drops hitting her face, shoulders, chest, and stomach with considerable force. Katie tried to tune out the rain, but couldn't manage it. She waited for the rain to stop, and shivered and cried while she waited.
Finally, the rain stopped. It was still cloudy, and dark, but at least Katie could see more than five feet or so. She took advantage of the improved visibility, and started walking.
Katie walked all night. There was nothing else to do, no point, in her mind, taking a break. It was too cold to rest, and she didn't want to stop. If she walked long enough, she might get somewhere.
As it was, her progress was painfully slow. Shackled, she could do little more than walk with a sort of shuffling step. She tried not to think about how slowly she was traveling, and how far she had to go.
Finally, the sun came up. It helped a little, but the sky was still cloudy and the morning was still chilly. The ground was damp and the road was still deserted.
Before she had gone much further, Katie realized she could see something ahead of her.
