You check the box marked "girl" and the staff member smiles at you as you hand your papers back in. She doesn't seem at all surprised that you don't want to share a cabin with your sister and directs the two of you to the next room where you will meet your counselor.
There are twelve overly excited college students holding signs with the name of their cabin on them. One of the girls' cabins appears to have already received all seven of their campers and are preparing to leave. You check the slip of paper in your hand. You're assigned to cabin Shasta. Your little sister gives Mom one last hug and runs to cabin Rainer where four other girls her age are waiting. You wave to your parents and lug your duffel bag to cabin Shasta.
Your counselor, Melissa, is the epitome of exuberance. Her red hair is bundled into a ponytail that pokes through the back of her "Camp Ferris Rocks!" baseball cap. She welcomes you with a cheer, checking your name off her list and counting heads one last time. "It looks like you're my last camper," she grins. "Let's head out!" Only one of the campers cheers; a long-haired brunette with an identical Camp Ferris baseball cap. The rest aren't nearly so outspoken, but seem relieved to rest their feet. You follow the group out the door, up the steps, and across the paved trailer path to the three-story wooden building which houses all of the girls' cabins.
Of course your cabin has to be on the third floor. Huffing and puffing, you arrive at the balcony at the top level. You open the door and immediately see the next decision you must make. Which bed should you take? There are two cabins on every floor. Every cabin has two rooms with two bunk beds each and one bathroom which is shared with the other cabin down the hall. All the beds but two are taken in this first room closest to the balcony and one of those empty beds has a sign on it that reads "Melissa's Bunk". You check out the second room in the back and see a similar story.
Which bunk do you choose?:
