You leave your home and look around the town, Pallet Town, where you live.
Next door is your rival Blue's house and the Oak Pokemon Research Lab.
There is also a little girl reading a sign in front of your house.
To the north is Route 1, and to the south is the watery Route 21, but you can't go to either until you've picked up a Pokemon.
