"Alright," you say, pushing Charmander forward gently. "Let's battle."
The other boys grin, and they step back to allow room for the battle. Their leader pulls a Pokéball from his belt and you take a deep breath. This is going to be your first battle and this could decide the fate of both you and Charmander. "I choose you," the leader calls out, and you brace yourself for something strong and powerful. "Caterpie!"
You almost want to laugh but you're in enough trouble with these guys as it is. Still, it's like bringing a knife to a gun fight. Caterpie is just a grass type and Charmander is a fire type and even though Caterpie was probably at a higher level, you now had more confidence that you could actually win this battle. Well, they are Pokémon gamblers. No one eve accused them of being brilliant masterminds.
"Go, Charmander," you say, and Charmander jumps out in front of you, tail ember burning brightly. "Tackle Caterpie!"
Charmander runs straight for Caterpie who seems unaware of what is happening in battle at the moment. The other trainer yells "Caterpie, move out of the way!" and Caterpie is just able to dodge Charmander's attack.
"Charmander, again!" Charmander hits Caterpie from behind, sending him flying, but amazingly, Caterpie manages to stay upright and land on his feet. You grimace. Maybe this won't be as easy as you thought it would be. You take a breath, and then see that Caterpie is heading straight for Charmander. "Dodge, Charmander, dodge!" And Charmander manages to side-step the oncoming Caterpie. That's when you saw it, the opportunity to win. "Now Charmander!" you yell out, and Charmander runs at the Caterpie who is slightly off balance, knocking it down. Caterpie is dazed, and you win your first Pokémon battle. For a second everything is silent, and then the guy who you were fighting for is cheering loudly and blood is rushing in your ears and Charmander is dancing around.
"Haha! Take that!" The other trainer says to the dumbfounded leader of the gang. "I'll be taking this," he said, taking what you suppose is his Totodile back. You lean down and pat Charmander on the head, congratulating him on his first victory. The gang grumbles, but throws a couple of bills on the ground, and they turn to walk into the treeline.
"Who's working at the poor store now?" The trainer calls after them, and you look up.
"You know," you say, "you probably shouldn't aggravate them. They could always come back and just punch you in the face and steal your Pokémon."
"What, those guys? Nah. I went to school with them, they don't have the balls for that." He attaches his Pokéball to his belt as you stand up. "David Romanski. Have we met before?"
"I don't think so."
"Hm... okay. Well I was just visiting my aunt in town, and she gave me this Totodile and I was just heading back home now. Those guys started following me and when I asked them what they wanted they started hardcore guffing me."
"Um... Okay. Where are you from?"
"Saffron City. You headed anywhere near there?"
"I'm just going to Viridian City right now man."
"Oh, okay! That's the way I'm going. We should go together."
"I-"
Well... I finally know his name. I mean, he doesn't seem like a bad guy, but I hardly know him. And I didn't think I'd have someone to travel with so soon.
