Come stranger, come. Sit with me by the fire. Have yourself some refreshment as you listen to my tale.

You have come to hear the story of The Chosen, I take it? Yes, yes, everyone who comes to see me wishes to learn more of that one.

First, you must know that this story is very old. The world has changed many times over since those times, so much of what you hear may be difficult to believe. Do not trouble yourself overly much, though, for the truth of the story will make itself known to you.

Our tale begins long ago, across the great Eastern Sea, on the edge of a haunted wilderness. In the long nights of the cold wasteland, fear was a constant companion for those forced to cross the devastation left by the ruin of the ancient city of Arenum. In every moment, in every breath, one could feel a dark menace on the edge of their consciousness; a presence lurking just beyond sight, waiting, planning, hungering.

On one night, a trade caravan had come to rest, camping in a guarded huddle, their carts overladen with treasures from a dozen exotic nations. On the edge of the firelight, in a tent sparsely appointed, arose a young guard from a fitful sleep.

The guard, a (young man), prepared to take station for the rest of the night.
