As soon as it sounds like they're gone, you set the sneakers and sweatshirt down, and sneak off into the back area of the store.
You barely notice when the battered carpet turns to cool, hard concrete beneath your bare soles, nor how your nipples harden in response to the cool air. You're too busy watching and listening for the two men.
The corridor you're in is short. There's a door at the end of the hall, and you can hear the faint sound of voices through it. There's also a ladder leading down to one side. The smell wafting up is horrible.
