Dez glanced around. "We really shouldn't be seen together. Sit by me at dinner. We'll talk then."
"And if I can't?" Zeth asked.
"Ask for me, if you think you can trust me," Dez said. "It's your first real conference; you have the right to choose. That's something they often forget to tell us." At least, nobody had told him. He turned and walked away, down the short entrance hall and into the great round foyer with its dozens of magnificent, erotic tapestries on the walls and a grand sweeping staircase leading to the upper floors. Only the Council members were allowed up there, under pain of death.
The hall to his left led to the dining hall, where the other mages would be gathered, socializing before dinner. Straight ahead were various libraries, galleries, studios and other such useless rooms. To the right was the long hall of private rooms where they would rest after the conference.
