Maybe with a small sign of life in the professor's duff and old lab, Leaf may be interested in talking. You don't blame her though, since she's surrounded by some strangers. You smile at her direction, and she smiles back. After that you look at Oak's direction, and he nods at you for your accomplishment. Blue apparently didn't notice any of this, and he stands with an awkward look on his face.
Now with that out of the way, it may be best to concentrate on what you came for.
Professor Oak: Anyway, future trainers, it is time to go and pick your Pokemon. Who wants to go first?
Leaf: Since Red seems so cute to me, he may choose first!
Blue doesn't know what to respond. Instead, he puts a poker face. You feel like your relationship with Leaf can only get greater though.
