Turkey is a secular country. You figure you're better off heading there than Iraq. Kind of silly to get out of a war zone only to get to an angry Shiite theocracy like Iraq. You turn the Jeep north.

As you drive through the desert, you hear artillery shells exploding, first only occasionally and far off in the distance, then louder and closer. The Syrian army is shelling the rebels. From the pattern of the sounds, they don't seem to be very selective about their targets.

You see a military checkpoint up ahead.

• Try to avoid it by driving off into the desert
