"I have a lot of experience with weapons and combat," you say. "I'll join the war platoon."
"Glad to have you aboard, Miss Hart," says Lieutenant Bell, shaking your hand. "Please, follow me."
"Thank you, Lieutenant. And you can call me Katarina."
"Okay, Katarina. And please, just call me Jessica. No need for formalities, especially now."
Jessica leads you into an armory. "I see you're already well armed, but here's some extra ammo for your shotgun, and some body armor. Not much does good against vampires, but every little bit helps." She then fingers your silver cross, touching it to the one around her own neck. "These are about the only things that can slow vampires down enough to make them hittable. Glad to see you have one, these are naturally in short supply. Now follow me, I'll introduce you to the rest of my team. Most of them are civilians like you. The regular military chain of command broke down long ago, but we've preserved what we could."
Jessica takes you to a barracks room. Bunk beds line one wall, and a recreation area occupies the rest of the large room. Eight men and three women, most in civilian clothes, are in the room. Jessica introduces you, then shows you to your bunk.
"Get some rest," she calls out to the room. "We're heading out again in about six hours."
One by one, the others finish their billiard and card games and climb into their bunks. Suddenly feeling very tired, you climb into yours and quickly fall asleep.
You awake suddenly in the middle of the night. You look around. Everyone else is fast asleep. You could have sworn you heard a whisper...
The whisper comes again, almost supernatural. "Katarina, come with me...Now is your only chance..." Looking towards the source of the sound, you see a faint red glow at the back of the room. You pause, but the whisper does not come again. The red glow grows fainter and fainter.
