Thoughts of a steaming hot shower and a fresh change of clothes chase everything else from your mind. You head downstairs and out the front doors, pausing as they close behind you. A slight chill is in the air, and the sky has turned overcast. It looks like it's going to rain soon.

Home is a couple of miles away. A cab is out of your budget, but the bus isn't. Alternately, you could walk. There's a shortcut that takes you down through some marshland, across a creek, and through the seedier part of town. It's fairly quick, if you don't get bogged down or caught up with some of the denizens of that part of town. The other way is much longer, but at least it's clean.

• Catch the bus to the stop near your apartment
