You duck out of the alley and see that traffic is stopped for a just-turned-red light. You slip under one of the cars, lift the manhole cover up enough to slide into the hole, replace the cover and drop into the sewers. Time to find a new city.

You proceed through the sewer system and then wait until night to walk through a river up to Bakersfield. Being in the river cleans the blood and brain matter off of you, and gets riud of the sewer smell also.

You sleep for a few hours in an abandoned house at the edge of town. Then you make yourself presentable and head in.
