Aloysius Background

Aloysius

A drunk goblin once stumbled out of his regio, and made his way into a polecat den, mistaking its inhabitant for a female goblin. Aloysius was the result. It didn't take him long to learn that he was not much like the rest of the business (family of polecats); he was born a few weeks after his brothers and sisters, and they were painfully stupid. Whenever he tried to have a meaningful conversation, they would look at him blankly and say "Play?" or "Food?" Exasperated, he wandered off to a tiny settlement, where a young girl quickly took him in and made him her personal pet. She called him "Weasel," and he was well-loved and cared for (despite the man of the house disapproving of the smell). After a few months, however, he had begun to figure out their language. When the girl set some chicken bones out for him, he turned up his nose and said, "Haven't you got any eggs?" She ran to her parents, screaming excitedly that Weasel could talk. They responded much like any parents would to their child's overactive imagination: with a certain disbelieving, patronizing acceptance. That incident clued Aloysius in on two very important things: One, that he needed to be careful who he spoke in front of; Two, that he did not belong there. He stayed with the girl for a few more months; they kept secret his ability to speak (and a few other odd magical abilities which manifested), and she fed him many eggs.

Finally, his desire to learn more about himself culminated, and Aloysius ventured off into the forest where he'd been born. It didn't take much exploration to find his way into the regio. He was given a cordial welcome. When he told his tale, one goblin's face turned a deep shade of red, while his friend all laughed and snickered around the table. "It was a simple mistake that anyone could have made!" he exclaimed. Indeed, the goblin's voice sounded very similar to the polecat's, their odd magical abilities were identical. Thus, father and son were reunited. It was then that he received the name "Aloysius."

It did not last long, however. Aloysius was consumed with a burning passion to learn. When he heard that a lady of the realm was leaving to study and become a maga, he jumped at the opportunity, begging her to allow him to accompany her. She agreed, and the two have been fast friends ever since.
