Homosexuality in Australia

The status of homosexuality is frequently debated in Australia. In general, the government is opposed to same-sex marriage but less averse to issues such as civil unions and adoption. A possible 2008 proposal in the Aussie legislature would allow government recognition of LGBT partnerships similar to that of America and Canada. Prime Minister Kevin Rudd (Australian Labour) says that he sees nothing inherently wrong with allowing a civil partnership registration for same-sex couples.

Gay adoption is legal in Australia. In general, the culture, which has never been strongly religious, and which has long been known for its institutionalized homosexuality, is accepting of LGBT people.
