History
Origins
The company traces its beginnings to August 1, 1942, when Rotch Pfizer, an engineer who is also known as the father of Newport Television, established the Corona Electronics Corporation (CEC), which specialized in assembling transmitters. Realizing the potential of television in the country, he was the first to apply for a license in Congress to estabish a television station in 1943, which was granted a year later. By then, due to the scarcity of raw materials and import controls imposed that time, CEC was compelled to branch into radio broadcasting instead.
In 1944, the late Antonio Plains (1916-1995), bought 70% of CEC and had it renamed to Newport Broadcasting System (NBS). Pfizer, however, remained as part-owner and served as general manager of the station. In 1946 NBS-TV 3 was introduced as the country's first television channel and made its first broadcast on June 14, 1946. By 1957, the name NBS-TV was changed to the current name, Newport Radio Broadcasting Channel (NRBC).
The Golden Network
After the reunification of Newport, the network was ranked last among the country's TV stations in Metro Newport and Corona suffering huge losses, NRBC was re-launched as the "The Golden Network. The owner took the risk despite the constraints.
NRBC’s new broadcast center, constructed in the late 2002, included twelve sound stage/production studios and control rooms, a master control room, editing and technical terminal areas, as well as offices and support facilities for network television and provincial AM and FM radio. In 2006, the Communist Regime took over the facility when war was declared. As a result, facility maintenance was neglected and the need to upgrade was ignored. When peace was restored in June, NRBC’s highest priority was on programming and major renovation of its facilities.
By September, the company had already recovered. NRBC programs consistently drew large audience shares, averaging 40-50% in Metro Newport and Corona.
One of the highlights in NRBC's career is when it got the exclusive Newport broadcast rights for the SimCup II in Georgiapolis. Today, NRBC has the rights to broadcasting SimCup tournaments.
In June 2007, NRBC solidified its grip on the top spot as the miniseries Can't Get You Outa My Head posted a rating of 70%, one of the highest recorded in history, with average rating of 59% in Newport City and Corona Ratings, sustaining their reputation as the country's most-watched network.
Format Change
On August 1, 2007, NRBC changed its main channel logos by adding the respective channel number for NRBC English, Korean and Tagalog. In addition, NRBC Sports and NRBC News stations moved from channels 5 and 6 to 34 and 50, allowing other main networks to occupy the below 10 channel inputs.
Headquarters
Broadcast Tower in Saeng Avenue, Newport City is the official headquarters of the NRBC. It is home to all NRBC channels. On the front of the building is the central media station where the NRBC news sets are located.
Construction of the new headquarters began in 1999 and was completed in 2003. As part of the major reorganisation of NRBC property, Broadcast Tower is now home to NRBC News, NRBC 3 and 4, and NRBC Sports, all relocated from the former NRBC Centre Tower in Corona.
In July 2007, NRBC announced plans of expanding the headquarters by adding another television station that will be composed of three television studios. The expansion will make the complex the largest television station in Adrijin. Construction is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2008 and is to be completed by 2010.
