Terraforming is the process where a planet's environment is transformed so that it resembles that of the Earth. The process is designed to make it easier for humans to survive on the planet. Depending on the amount of change needed this can talk tens to hundreds of years.
Terraforming is often carried out as the first step when colonising a planet. An initially small number of colonists is sent to start and maintain the terraforming process before support for a varge population is viable.
