Integral Fairbrook Wingates Hellsing

From Worldinherhands

Integral Fairbrook Wingates Hellsing is a character from the manga Hellsing (adapted in two animated series, one short 13 episodes AU take of the story and a more faithful to the plot, but still with differences, OVA series recently).

Hellsing was written by Kouta Hirano as a continuation/spin off of the novel Dracula by Bram Stoker, it differs from its plot in three things: the Count having romantic feelings for Mina Harker (like the Coppola movie without the reincarnation stuff) for some unknown reason, she was why he traveled to London; the other important detail is the ending, Johnathan is nowhere to be seen, therefore he's not the one who kills the Count, rather Abraham van Helsing (who is younger looking here) defeats him; and, finally, Dracula becomes the servant of his bloodline instead of meeting a final end, after his 'death' and rebirth, his weaknesses were eliminated thanks to their research and his strength increased until he became the "ultimate undead" and weapon for their organization. Abraham's older son, Arthur, baptized the Count with his new identity: Alucard.

To understand Integra's character, her personality and her struggle, it's necessary describe her background story.

Integra is Abraham van Helsing's granddaughter and current "Master" of Alucard and leader of the Royal Order of Protestant Knights, member of the Twelve Conventions, which is basically the Round Table in modern times that controls the "British Empire" (politics are funny). She met Alucard shortly after her father died. Her father, Arthur Hellsing, began to see his servant as a dangerous drug and poison to be a successful medicine, so he locked him up in the basement. He only told Integra about a "last resort" secret their family kept, if she was in trouble, he would be the instrument of her salvation. She had no idea he was a vampire, sheltered as she was, she was taught vampires were the true monsters and her enemies by her father. Before Arthur died, he assigned Integra as his heir and told his brother, Richard Hellsing, to look after her. Three days after, mad in greed, Richard and his men (who took over the organisation) tried to kill his niece. Integra was only twelve years old, outmatched by older men, but she managed to avoid them and she rushed to the basement as her father told her to, waiting to find a knight in shining armor to protect her of all evil. Instead, when she arrived, she found a dried corpse.

When all hope seemed to be lost, Richard had her and had shot her at her shoulder. The corpse stirred, awaken by her blood, revitalized, the vampire protected Integra, killing Richard's men while she stared in shock that her father had a vampire, a legendary enemy of Hellsing, in the basement. She couldn't understand his reasons. Then the vampire turned to her and gave a sweeping kneel, just like a knight in shining armor. He asked her if she was alright. Richard tried to shoot her again, but he shielded her with his arm, then told her uncle his blood and brain stink, that was why he was unfit to lead. Integra snapped out the shock, used the vampire's arm to steady hers and aimed at her uncle.

"What's your name?"

"Alucard. That's how your predecessor called me."

Integra fired twice. Richard Hellsing was executed by her. She stopped being a little girl since that day, her white/black upbringing concepts of who was the monster were challenged. In her darkest hours, a Hellsing, a human being, tried to kill her, and her savior was a vampire.

That was a decade ago, Integra is currently coming from a war where she had to see her London burning before her very eyes, all the citizens killed or turned into zombies/ghouls, while she was the sole survivor. She heard a friend of her father, Sir Penwood, giving her a farewell message as he blew himself up to kill vampires in his headquarters. Fanatic Catholics and Undead Nazis invaded at the same time. She was betrayed by her butler, Walter, for a chance to fight Alucard. After all that, she had to witness in despair how Alucard himself vanished from existence thanks to a quantum theory made flesh. She won the war, killed the Major, had Alucard's armies impaled her foes previously, but she is obviously embittered by her losses, it happened in a night, and took a toll onto her. Integra, despite being raised and being part of an infamous vampire hunter family, doesn't believe vampires are the true monsters anymore. Human or vampire, the forest of the impaled Alucard built for her didn't recognize this, enemies are enemies and would be silenced no matter what. Integra's extremely ruthless and efficient in her mission. Major wasn't a vampire, he hated Alucard for being one, and he was the true monster. Alucard was never a monster in her eyes.

So she wanted to go back home, to her headquarters with Seras. To rebuild everything and wait for Alucard's return. She has no doubts he will be back to her one day.

But God had other ideas. ;)

Now she lives in London, in her rebuilt headquarters at the Epping Forest with her army (the ones she thought that died) and the Wild Geese (sans Pip). She feels uncomfortable around them because she was the one who killed them after they became ghouls and the Wild Geese are more difficult to control without Captain Bernadotte. Not only because of this, but because she feels increasingly weirded out around the living, she feels more at ease with the undead. Another characters npced would be Sir Hugh Islands and Sir Robert Walsh.

Unlike canon, Integra was able to save the eyesight of her left eye.

In terms of skills and abilities, Integra is a superb warrior who was raised to fight the undead and had the best education in her reach as one of the twelve who rule Great Britain in the shadows. She is a master fencer with an impeccable aim with firearms. She lived with Alucard and Walter for a decade and obviously picked some of their deadly effiency. Although her role in the story is rarely about her fighting (she's the natural leader), when she fights, she's never beaten. Her speed, reflexes and overall strength in combats are superior to the average vampire, she's also known to be able to block a regenerator like Anderson briefly. She's tolerant to pain, when her eye was damaged, she barely flinched. Besides this, she's intelligent, well-read, good with strategy and scheming, aside of the special Alchemy the Hellsing family has. The series never went deeply what they did (damn you Hirano!), but they could turn Alucard into a godmodder who is almost invincible, this carried into his bloodline as Seras Victoria is far above the average Dracula or Draculina protrayed. Technically, she doesn't have "magic powers", but she can make vampires stronger than they are, eliminate all their weakness, a "Bird of Hermes". Her blood too is extremely irresistible, a few drops can sate a starving vampire as if it was full, a bit more could revitalize and awake Alucard after 20 years of hibernation as new. In the... "adaptation" of the tv series (and something I'm borrowing here), a small amount could open the gates of hell to summon a demon. She's also resistant to mindreading (manga) and can fight mind control (anime). Her greatest skill is, however, her obvious charisma and firm personality. Integra not only had older knights respected her as a 12 years old when she assumed her position, but commanded the leadership of her enemies of Iscariot briefly, forcing one to light her cigar and ordering them to escort her home when they tried to make her their prisoner. That commanding force has Alucard at her feet since they met.

Those who are familiar with Dracula's spin offs/formulas (something Major, the antagonist is aware, and calls their last war in 1999, a rehearsal of what happened over a century ago in London), despite her name, Integra doesn't fill the "van Helsing" position as old religious Nemesis of Count Dracula in Hellsing. That role is fulfilled by Father Alexander Anderson who was compared to Abraham in text. Out of all the token roles present, hers would be similar to Mina's with the expected twists Hellsing is fond of (after all, Alucard/Dracula is the protagonist here).

Her PB is Nicole Kidman.
