Daniel H. Garrison was an American politician from Maryland. He represented Maryland's Third Congressional District from 1998 until 2011 when he was killed in the attacks on the Capitol. He famously challenged Evangeline Heaton in 2008 for the position of Atlantic Seaboard Senator and was a close friend of Senator Daniel Morey and godfather of the Senator's son Matthew Morey.

Personal Life

Daniel was born in 1956 in Annapolis, MD as second son to a U.S. war veteran. In 1975 he also joined the Navy and served mainly in the Atlantic Ocean and was stationed overseas in Europe. It was there that he met his wife Jara, a faithful Muslim, and in 1979 left the Navy to get married. Jara played Tennis participating in several WTA tournaments and later started her own private tennis academy in Maryland. After returning home they moved to Maryland and Daniel started his studies of International Relations and graduated in 1983.

Daniel was an active member of the Catholic Church, member of the National Rifle Association, member of the American Conservative Union, member of the Israel Allies Caucus, the Educational Excellence Caucus, the National Taxpayers Union, the Congressional Caucus for Women's Issues, the American Legion, the Family Research Council, the Second Amendment Caucus, The American Way Forward and the Conservative Christian Caucus. He also chaired the Becket Fund and the Competitive Enterprise Institute.

Early Career

From 1983 on Daniel worked for the U.S. Department of State until in 1988 he released his best-selling novel 'Language of the Heart' which was sold well over two million times. The novel is about the tragic love between a Christian man and a Muslim woman and the problems they face in their societies.

He continued his efforts for more cultural respect and lectured at local universities from 1988 until 1994 when he started traveling the world lecturing.

Political Career

Congress

In 1998 Daniel decided to give back something to his beloved home and successfully campaigned for Maryland's 3rd congressional district seat. He served Maryland's Third until his death in 2011 during the terror attacks on the Capitol.

2008 Senate Race

The 2008 Atlantic Seaboard Senatorial Race made Dan Garrison famous throughout the country. He challenged popular Senator Evangeline Heaton who, although he greatly disagreed with her political views, respected greatly. He ran as a Reagan Republican losing to Heaton by 19%. His famous campaign quote was "I am who I am" referring to the fact that he was a vivid conservaive running for office in one of America's most liberal regions. He also became famous for a TV ad called "You are America."
