Angela Merkel (born July 17, 1954) was Chancellor of Germany from 2005 till 2020. She initially led a CDU/CSU-SPD Grand Coalition for 4 years before forming a CDU/CSU-FDP coalition following the 2009 elections. She stepped down as Chancellor in 2020 in order to avoid being toppled in a party leadership contest. Frank-Walter Steinmeier, of the rival SPD, succeeded her as Chancellor.

2020 Resignation

Merkel resigned as Chancellor in 2020 when senior party members informed her that there would be a vote to depose her as Chancellor if she did not voluntarily step down and that they had the numbers to do so. The FDP subsequently withdrew its support for the government, forcing the CDU/CSU into a coalition with the SPD, which they did only on the condition that SPD leader Frank-Walter Steinmeier became Chancellor. Jurgen Ruttgers succeeded Merkel as CDU leader and became Vice-Chancellor.
