Abstract Expressionism

From Unawiki

Abstract Expressionism is a Post-World War II specifically art movement. Influenced by German expressionism, futurism and cubism it was developed exclusively in America and mad New York and San Francisco the art center of the western world. Recognizable in its style is the emotional intensity, self-denial, anti-figurative aesthetic, looking rebellious, anarchic and nihilistic. Like surrealism it shares a spontaneous, subconscious creation, for example walking over the pictures and pouring out color. There are also similarities to Russian artists like Kandinsky. Politically, it is an answer to the McCarthy-era of censorship by being too abstract to be censored and seeming apolitical. The most work of arts during that time were paintings and sculptures. Famous artists are Jackson Pollock and Paul Jenkins.
