The Great Bure build begins as First Footers settle into island life

We've been going just 6 days now on our little tribal island and already so much has happened. Since our amazing launch day last Friday things have settled and a village has sprung up amongst the coconut trees. Here are some pics, podcasts and news from the Vorovoro tribe.

From Bengazi

"I return from town at sunset to see all these figures coming down the beach to unload the sacks of rice and cases of beer off the boat and head back into the tribal village. Someone dances with fire-poi further down the beach while others throw a frisbee. I can smell garlic and fish coming from the kitchen and further on lies a silohette of a first footer in a hammock. Tribe life is happening. I have to pinch myself."

September 1st Podcasts

Listen to the chanting and the chat, its everything but tasting the Kava itself!

From your September chief - 'Poques'

Island life is awesome. Where shall I start, all the first footers arrived ok and landed on the beach of Vorovoro . Every single one of the First Foot Tribe are in awe of the Island. We were met by the Mali tribe and the most fantastic ceremony you could possibly imagine. Warriors ,dancing girls and all the pomp and ceremony fit for kings or queens. Honoured is the only way you can explain how I feel by the way the Mali tribe treated us all and me especially as your Chief.

I'm sitting here on a drift wood table looking out to sea writing this posting. It's just so unreal. Everyone is getting stuck in to some kind of work today. 2 are making repairs to the toilet block steps. Others are clearing up old fire spots that the Mali tribe seem to light any and everywhere. We are going to bury the waste under the foundations of the Great Bure and then the beach will look so much better for all. I snorkelled over the reef yesterday too. WOW!! Now that was great, thousands of the most colourful fish and amazing corals that you could only dream of. It was like swimming in the biggest fish tank. There has been a few sightings of sea snakes and sharks so far, but I have not come across any yet. We have all been told how to deal with them . Dan is doing a good job on the safety issue for us all.

I just looked up to see Raina and Becky doing some washing in the sea (Using Coconut soap which does not harm the sea life) It's like some scene for a south pacific film . Doug and Steve ( From USA Today) are just entering the water to go snorkel over the reef.

Well folks Paradise is all that Ben and Mark said and much much more. You are going to love every second here. Just as much as every single members so far. What we can all do here is so important, not only for us but the Mali people and for the future of tourism. As a Tribe we have so much responsibility to this Island an the dreams of all who will follow our example. But the Tribe members I have met here and in the UK are the right people for this job. Plus the ones I have not yet met I just have a feeling are just the same. Wonderful!

Other first footers reactions...

Raina Jensen: 'It is better than I could of possibly expected. This is a once in a lifetime experience."

Justin Martindale: "The whole day gave me the shivers, my diet has never been better, and the open air showers are wonderful. Fiji has a rhythm and I can't wait to experience the next 2 weeks."

Nick Creson: "You see the pictures and read about it but nothing can prepare you for what is actually here. It still hasn't sunk in. I've been travelling for a year to Thailand, Australia etc.., just following the tourist trail. This is the first place that feels like I've found something unique, untouched and truly off the beaten track."

Dixie Tanner: "Tribewanted is the best experience of my life."

The Great Bure build begins

On Tuesday the Mali Sharks returned to Vorovoro to begin building the Great Bure with the Vorovoro tribe. Within 48 hours the foundation have been planted and the two vast central posts heaved into place...check out the progress.
