Fishing traps and tribal yoga – updates from Vorovoro…

The Mali village of Ligalevu revived a classic fishing tradition for the tribe this week by weaving a ring of coconut leaves vetween rocks to catch fish as the tide goes out. Successful? Yes, in that we all learnt how to build a Fijian fish-trap. No, in the sense that we got the tide wrong so there were very few fish. That didn’t seem to bother Chief Wildgeeza because he had his spear. It’s the simple things heh chief!

Gigi (67), the eldest tribe member to visit Vorovoro, teaches the tribe the ‘colied cobra’, ‘happy cow’ and ‘crying baby’ – or something along those lines. Rai & Kaesa demonstrated that spending most of your life sitting cross-legged on the floor gave you a massive advantage when it came to yoga. The builders looked on, “We saw this game on TV once.” Vinaka Gigi!

Voting Tikina surges into action…

The Voting Tikina has formed, elected Gilligan as Elder, had its first meetings, and now has some proposals for you to consider.

One of our first orders of business was to set up a simple system for getting the votes to the Tribe. Wanna hear it?

  • A vote is called for by a Tribe member in a forum or submitted to the Voting Tikina.
  • The Voting Tikina quickly concurs on the wording and posts it in a dedicated forum.
  • The Voting Tikina announces the proposed vote in the next Newsletter with a link to the forum thread for pre-vote debate and discussion.
  • The Voting Tikina finalizes the text of the vote and posts it to the Voting Booth.
  • Results are available online and announced in the Newsletter.

Pretty easy, eh? Now the next part is up to you! Several votes have already been proposed and lively debate is starting. The vote will take place February 2 to 9, 2007 so head on over to the forum to read the Draft Version of the proposals and give a shout out in the forum! We want to hear from you!

For your consideration for the February 2 vote >

  • The Tribal Tikina Purpose and Structure Proposal
  • Voting Schedules and Schedule for Chief Elections Proposal
  • Extra Time Clarification Proposal

As you see Tribe... there is a lot to decide so get yourselves into the Forums and be sure to vote on February 2!!!! If you haven't been to any forums in a while... now is the time to get back there!

Tribal News Tikina

From Lolli: “I am the Elder of the Tribe News Tikina as its something I feel is the very basis on which we need to help towards keeping our members involved and my aim is to work closely with all the Elders from the other Tikinas ensuring that they are rightly represented as well as our wonderful tribe members and Chiefs / team on the island.”

So far the tribewanted story has been told around the world thanks to Andy Barr, Imal Wagner , Shine team, James Vlahos, and a lot of enthusiastic tribbies. Keep telling the story, and better still come and live it in Fiji!

Filming on Vorovoro – update from Shine

Many of you will be aware of this already, but for those who don’t know Shine productions are making an observational documentary series following the first year in the life of Tribewanted.

We have been filming with co-founders Ben & Mark since April 2006, following the process of making a project of this scale a reality. We are very keen for as many members as possible to take part in this documentary. This project is a life changing experience for many involved and we want to tell these stories, and see how people from around the world can come together online to make a difference in the real world.

For those of you who are worried about the TV involvement it’s worth highlighting that that this a BBC 2 documentary series, not a reality show. We are obviously interested in telling the personal journeys of those involved, but we are equally interested in the business challenges the project faces, showcasing Fijian culture and highlighting the logistical complexities of creating an eco village on a deserted Island. All these factors will make for a fascinating, entertaining and informative series. It’s a unique and incredibly exciting project that we are delighted to be following.

We will be filming on the Island off and on until September 2007 and would appreciate your involvement. We will operate as a small crew of two and we will try to make the filming as unobtrusive as possible, but we would like to hear the opinions and experiences of those on the Island. There is no obligation to take part in the documentary and if you don’t want to be featured you can inform the production team on Vorovoro.

Any of you not on the Island, but keen to put your opinions across and tell your stories please let us know. With your permission we hope to film at tribal gatherings and potentially talk to members before and after they head to Vorovoro. We also hope to obtain Video logs from those who are able and willing.

A big thank you to those who have taken part so far and Vinaka Vakalevu to all of you who will hopefully participate in the future.
