Voyager class destroyer

From Themarshallwiki

The Voyager class Helicopter Destroyers are Australian designed and built AEGIS equipped Helicopter Destroyers in service with the Royal Australian Navy. They are made by the Australian Submarine Corporation, in South Australia. The design is based on the American Arleigh Burke class Guided Missile Destroyers. Their main role is anti-submarine warfare, for which they are equipped with VL-ASROC, four or five Seahawk, and MU90 Torpedos.

The ships are well armed, having 64 Mk-41 VLS cells for Standard missiles, VL-ASROC, Tomahawk cruise missiles, and Evolved Sea Sparrow Missiles (often carried). The ship also carries 8 Harpoon missiles in quad launchers.

They have a large below-deck hangar for up to five S-70B Seahawk helicopters. There are three landing spots on the deck. Their anti-surface capability consists of a 127mm gun, Seahawk-launched Pengiuns and Hellfires, and Harpoon missiles. AEGIS with Standard and Evolved Sea Sparrow Missiles gives the Voyager class an excellent anti-air capability. They could theoretically operate Harriers, however they would be confined to vertical take off only, and part from AGM-65 Maverick missiles, no suitable weapons are normally carried. On one instance, a Harrier has landed on a HMAS Vendetta. The Harrier had suffered several malfunctions and was running short of fuel. The use of HMAS Vendetta's pad saved the pilot from a ditching/ejection into water and saved the taxpayer a $30 million aircraft.

The Voyager class destroyers lack the full command and control facilities of a cruiser or destroyer. The hull is largely given over to machinery, hangar space, storage, and weapon systems especially the vertical launchers.

There are four in service:

  • HMAS Voyager
  • HMAS Vendetta
  • HMAS Vampire
  • HMAS Victorious
