The Socialist Republic of Australia Armed Forces find their origins in the British colonial forces, the first of which entered Australia in 1788. The Armed Forces in their present form were created in 1938, when Australia was declared a republic. They have now completely shed their British origins, becoming Soviet in doctrine, equipment, and practice. The Armed Forces recruit partly by voluntary means (Volunteer Soldiers), and conscription (National Servicemen). The majority of the Army is conscripted.

The Socialist Republic of Australia Armed Forces have the following missions:

  • Defend the people, territory, and interests of the Socialist Republic of Australia.
  • Defend and advance the interests of the Communist Party of Australia.
  • Advance the cause of global socialism.

The Socialist Republic of Australia Armed Forces conists of the following branches:

There are currently 185,000 men and women in the armed forces. The armed forces are equipped with late model Soviet equipment, much of which is made in the Socialist Republic of Australia.

The Armed Forces are legally under the control of the Socialist Republic of Australia Governent, however in practice they are under the complete control of the Communist Party of Australia. Party control over the military is exercised by three organisations coordinated in the Defence Department by the Main Office of Defence Political Work (and in the party by the CPA Soldiers', Sailors', and Airmen' Committee):

  • The Australian Political Corps (Army)
  • The SRAAF Political Service (Air Force)
  • Naval Headquarters Political Branch (Navy)

Each unit of a particular size (Navy: Ship, Air Force: Squadron, Army: Battalion) has a Deputy Commanding Officer for Political Work, who leads the Communist Party cell for that unit. The Political Officer has no military power, and is responsible for morale, and instilling "party disclipline" and "party ideals" into servicemen and women.
